HAMPTON — A 22-year-old Hampton Beach lifeguard, who spent her time protecting others and teaching children to surf, is fighting to regain her health following a serious accident.

At about 6 p.m. on Aug. 31, Jane Fougere was driving her moped on Winnacunnet Road in Hampton, heading home after her lifeguard shift at Hampton Beach, according to her mother, Kellie Johansen. The plan was to gather her gear and then go back to get in some surfing, a sport she loved.

Johansen hasn’t read the official accident report yet, but she believes her daughter lost control of the moped, veered off the road and hit a wall along the roadside. The crash propelled Fougere over the moped’s handlebars and the wall before she hit the ground.

“She had a fractured skull and a brain bleed,” Johansen said. “During the first five hours, they told us she might not make it. It was scary. But after three hours the brain bleed stabilized.”

A LONG ROAD TO RECOVERY

A GoFundMe page has been set up to help Fougere during the recovery. Those wishing to donate can access the link at bit.ly/3S1pGey.
